Sand or replace parquet? How to choose for your floor

Scratches do not always mean buying a new floor. Compare sanding, repairs and replacement by floor type, condition and the complete scope of work.
Identify the floor before choosing a finish
Sanding may suit a wooden floor with enough remaining wear layer and a sound base. Scratches and worn lacquer do not automatically mean replacing the whole floor. Start by identifying the material and assessing its condition.
Solid wood, engineered wood, laminate and vinyl can look similar in photographs. The timber wear layer and earlier sanding matter. Laminate and vinyl are not sanded back like wooden parquet. Send the product name or original fitting details if available.
When is sanding worth considering?
A largely sound floor with sufficient timber may be a candidate for sanding and refinishing. Surface wear, scratches and uneven colour can prompt an assessment. The outcome depends on the timber, damage depth and chosen finish.
If only the protective coating is worn, a maintenance treatment may sometimes be suitable. Kährs' wood-floor guidance distinguishes surface maintenance from renovation down to bare wood. Your floor's assessment and its own manufacturer's instructions determine the approach.
When might repair or replacement be needed?
- Too little wear layer: further sanding may damage the board's construction.
- Loose or broken boards: investigate repair or individual board replacement.
- Deep moisture damage: identify and address the moisture source first.
- Problems underneath: surface treatment cannot stabilise a faulty base.
- A different material or pattern: new flooring may better match a complete design change.
Local damage does not always require complete replacement. A repair depends on compatible boards and finishes being available. It cannot be promised to disappear visually into the old floor.
Compare the complete job
Floor sanding involves preparation, any repairs, sanding and finishing. New parquet installation may add removal, disposal, flooring, levelling and skirting.
Ask for two defined scopes if both options are feasible. Comparing sanding with the retail price of boxed parquet leaves out fitting and completion. Read the installation quote guide and sanding cost guide for the items to check.
Plan access and waiting time
Either option needs a clear working area. Discuss furniture, routes through the home, extraction and when the floor can be used. Sanding, lacquer, oil and glued installation have different stages and waiting periods. Agree a schedule for the actual products selected.
Will sanding remove every dark stain?
No. A stain may extend beyond the depth that can safely be sanded. Board repair or replacement may be needed after the moisture problem has been resolved.
Can the old floor be made lighter?
Removing the old finish may allow a different colour. Ask for a sample on your timber; a photograph of another floor is not a reliable prediction.
Have the floor assessed before ordering replacements
Expert Parket og Mál works in Reykjavík, Hafnarfjörður, Kópavogur, Garðabær, Mosfellsbær and other locations by agreement. Send the location, approximate area, an overall photograph and close-ups of damage. Mention previous sanding and underfloor heating if known.
Request an assessment and free quote before choosing sanding, repair or replacement. Photographs help the first discussion but cannot establish the remaining wear layer or subfloor condition on their own.
